A senior police official on Saturday said that rampant extortion was causing the prices of essentials to rise.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police was working to finish making an updated list of extortionists within one or two days and arrests would begin afterward, DMP commissioner Sheikh Mohhamad Sajjat Ali.


He made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest a discussion held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital.

‘Resistance against extortionists has become imperative. Prices of daily necessities are increasing due to extortion,’ stated Sajjat, mentioning that the police was responsible to curb the extortion.

‘I am making an updated list of extortionists. Steps will be taken to arrest them soon after completing the list in one or two days,’ said Sajjat.

The police commissioner warned extortionists, saying, ‘Do not force me to take strict legal steps.’

Mentioning extortion as a social issue, he called for collaborative efforts from all sectors of society to combat it and encouraged people to provide information about instances and perpetrators.

‘Most people are middle class, lower middle class and poor. When prices increase due to extortion, they find it difficult to run their families,’ said Sajjat.

He commissioner also spoke about endless traffic congestion, drug abuse, rise in mugging incidents.

He stated that political, social and religious events should be held in designated areas to avoid traffic congestion caused by street rallies and gatherings.
