Agitating students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology on Saturday accused the police of showing reluctance to accept the case filed over the death of a fellow student on Friday.
Mohtassim Masud died on the spot when a car hit him in the Purbachal area.
The students said that they were afraid that the influential father of the youth who was driving the car might pull strings to save his son as happened often in the country where victims had no hope of getting justice if socially influential persons were involved in accidents.
The students are planning to visit the Narayanganj court premises today where the car driver and his two companions during the accident are expected to be produced in connection with the case.
Students believe their peaceful presence is required at the court to counter the high social status of the accused.
At a press briefing at the central Shaheed Minar of BUET on Saturday afternoon, the students complained of a lack of cooperation from police when the victim’s family was trying to file a case.
It was confirmed after the accident that the driver was drunk and that he failed to produce a driving licence to the police.
The driver, Mubin Al Mamun, 20, is the son of retired brigadier general Abdullah Al Mamun.
The students at the press conference also recalled the moments immediately after the accident when they found the former army officer trying to influence the police.
Mubin’s mother offered money to some of the students as well, the students alleged, adding that she tried to convince them that filing of a case over the matter was unnecessary.
They also criticised misleading comments by the defendant’s lawyer and media reports portraying the incident as an ‘accident.’
The students said that they considered the incident as a murder.
The students also announced that they would soon submit a memorandum to the home affairs adviser retired lieutenant general Jahangir Alam Chowdhury demanding justice through a proper investigation into the case and maximum punishment for the accused.
In the written statement read out at the press conference, the students said that even police were not much welcoming to them when they arrived at the Rupganj police station after the accident.Â
The students at the press briefing also demanded that the accused bear the cost of treatment of the two injured and pay adequate compensation for the family of the deceased.
They also wanted legal action against anyone attempting to obstruct the investigation process in the case.
The two injured students are Amit Saha, 22, and Mehedi Hasan, 22. The three BUET students were at the police check post because they were asked to stop. Their motorcycle was parked nearby.
Police arrested Mubin Al Mamun, 20, the driver and son of the former army officer, Md Merajul Karim, 22, son of Rizwanul Karim of Pirerbag, and Md Asif Chowdhury, 19, son of Bahauddin Chowdhury Baker of Uttara sector 13 and sent them to jail on Friday.
