Students of CRP Nursing College staged a protest on Sunday, blocking the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Savar for over an hour, following the death of a first-year student in a road accident.
The demonstrators, who began their blockade at about 11:30am, demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the bus driver and assistant involved in the incident.
The protest caused significant traffic congestion on both lanes of the highway, said Md Jewel Mia, officer-in-charge of Savar police station.
The victim Protyay Sarkar was a first-year student in the Diploma in nursing department. He was fatally struck by a bus of ‘Thikana Paribahan’ on Saturday.
A case was filed with the Savar highway police station in that connection on Sunday.
The protest ended at about 1:00pm after assurances from ‘Thikana Paribahan’ that compensation would be provided to the victim’s family.
Police also assured the protesters that the driver and his assistant would be arrested promptly.
