The students of Nursing College under the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed, widely known as CRP, on Monday blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar upazila for the second day running, demanding justice and safer roads after their fellow student was killed in a road accident in the area.

Under the banner of Nursing Chhatra Samaj (nursing student community, over a hundred students brought out a protest march from the campus after boycotting classes and examinations.

Following the protest march, the students sat on the highway at about 11:30am, halting vehicular movement on both sides of the busy highway.

‘We took to the streets once again, as the assurances from the police proved empty. Despite their promises, they have yet to arrest the bus driver responsible for the death brought by his reckless driving,’ said Nowshad Amin, a student joining the protest.

They also placed a six-point charter of demands which include, transport companies  must take responsibility for the death, the driver and his assistant must be arrested within 24 hours; discipline in the transport system must be established, and speed breakers in accident-prone areas must be built in Savar.

Separate teams from the Savar upazila administration, Savar Highway Police station, and Savar Model Police Station rushed to the spot and requested the demonstrators to withdraw the blockade.

The students withdrew the blockade at about 3:00pm after being assured of meeting their demands by next Sunday, officer-in-charge of Savar Highway Police Saugatul Alam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

They also gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the police to arrest the driver.
