The Indian Border Security Force allegedly picked up 13 Bangladeshis from the Gowainghat border in Sylhet on Sunday night and sent them to jail on Monday.

Sohag, 24, of Guchchhagram village at Purba Jaflong union under the Goainghat upazila, Rubel, 22, son of Siraj Miah, Rony, 21, son of Dhanu Miah, and Mobarak, 20, son of Jamal Miah, of the same village and Arif, 20, and Nayan, 19, of Sonatila village at the same union, are among those picked up by the BSF, local residents said.

Local union parishad member Md Abdul Mannan confirmed the matter to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday.

‘Relatives of several of the detained came to my house this morning. They requested me to persuade the local officer of the Border Guard Bangladesh for taking steps to bring the victims back to the country,’ he said.

Local people said that young people of their area used to hang out at places along the border during winter evenings.

Several youths inadvertently went near the border line adjacent to the Sonatila village at around 8:00pm on Monday while they were chatting among themselves and a patrol team of the BSF picked them up, they said.

‘Later, the BSF had sent them to jail on Monday through Dauki police station in Meghalaya province of India,’ a villager said seeking anonymity.

BGB 48 Battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Md Hafizur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday afternoon that they heard about the matter from their sources but nobody made any complaint so far over the incident.
