No case was filed yet on Tuesday following seven people’s death in a brutal attack on a vessel carrying fertiliser on the Meghna River in Chandpur on Monday.

‘No case has been filed yet but preparations for filing a case are underway,’ said Md Mohiuddin Sumon, officer-in-charge of Chandpur’s Haimchar police station.


The OC said that the police were yet to know the motive behind the murder.

On Monday afternoon, members of Bangladesh Coast Guard and River police recovered five bodies and rescued three injured victims from the vessel. Later, two of the injured succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, police said.

Meanwhile, Jewel Rana, 21, a resident of Faridpur, sole survivor in the incident is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

During a visit to the DMCH on Tuesday afternoon, Jewel was found unable to speak due to his injury on his neck.

Jewel’s mother Rehana said that he started working as a crew member four years ago.

‘I don’t know why this happened. Please pray for my son,’ she said.

DMCH doctor Mohammad Salah Uddin said that the condition of the injured was stable and he did not have major damage.

The victim would be able to speak soon, he added.

Family members of the deceased, meanwhile, on Tuesday claimed the killings were pre-planned and demanded justice after identifying the bodies at the Chandpur General Hospital morgue.

The bodies were handed over to the families after autopsy, said AKM Iqbal, officer-in-charge of Chandpur river police station.

The deceased are Golam Kibria ,55, captain of the vessel hailed from Faridpur, his nephew Sheikh Sabuj,35, a sailor, Aminul Munshi, 40, helmsman from Narail district, Majedul,16, a sailor from Magura, Sajibul Islam, 26, a sailor from Magura, Salahuddin, 40, an engineer from Narail and Kazi Rana 24, the vessel’s cook from Munshiganj.

Each victim’s family received Tk 25,000 in financial assistance, Chandpur deputy commissioner Mohammad Mohsin Uddin said.

The district administration, meanwhile, formed a probe committee over the incident headed by additional district magistrate Ekramul Siddique, United News of Bangladesh reported.

The Ministry of Industries, meanwhile, also formed a four-member investigation committee.

The committee was instructed to submit its report in next five working days with clear recommendations on the cause of the killings, the extent of damage and liability, and what to do in the future to prevent similar naval accidents.
