
The police have arrested five people in connection with an assault on freedom fighter Abdul Hai Kanu at Chauddagram in Cumilla.
Cumilla additional superintendent of police Arafatul Islam confirmed this information on Tuesday.
‘Since no complaint has been filed in that incident so far, the police will produce the detained before court under Section 54. Then it will be a regular case,’ he added.
The arrested are Ismail Hossain Majumder, 43, Jamal Uddin Majumder, 58, Ilias Bhuiyan, 58, Abul Kalam Azad, 48, and Imtiaz Abdullah Sajjad, 19.
Police said that the arrests were made after analysing video footage of the incident.
The drives are on to arrest others involved in the incident, the police added.
Earlier on Sunday, a group of people allegedly by supporters of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, assaulted the freedom fighter, also a former central member of Bangladesh Krishak League, farmer wing of the Awami League, by putting a garland of shoes around his neck and asking him to leave the area.
A video of the incident went viral on social media on Sunday night which drew huge condemnation and criticism from the government, political parties and people across the country.
The upazila Jamaat-e-Islami directly rejected the allegation that the accused were its supporters.
In a statement chief adviser’s press office condemned the assault on the freedom fighter and added that the police and local administration were asked to launch an investigation into the incident and bring the perpetrators to book.
Abdul Hai Kanu on Tuesday said, ‘My appeal to the government is that we get justice. If they do not punish the miscreants, they will have to answer for it in the future.’
According to Chauddagram police station, earlier eight cases were filed against Abdul Hai on various charges including murder and extortion.
