
The Jatiya Nagarik Committee, a platform of the youths who played a pivotal role in the student-led mass uprising, on Tuesday demanded the interim government take steps for submitting complete information to the United Nations’ fact-finding mission investigating rights abuses and atrocities committed during the student-led mass uprising.
Referring to a media report, the committee condemned and protested at delays, partial disclosures and non-cooperation from the authorities concerned in the investigation.
‘We believe that uncovering all facts about human rights violations and the July massacre and furthering the judicial process are essential responsibilities for post-uprising Bangladesh. The government must immediately issue necessary directives in this regard,’ said a statement issued by the committee.
The government must clarify if there remains any unwillingness to provide information by the state apparatuses, various forces or intelligence agencies, said the committee.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk made a two-day visit to Bangladesh in October.
In a meeting with the interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, the UN rights chief expressed his hope that the UN fact-finding mission would finalise its report by the first week of December.
The UN fact-finding team is conducting an independent and impartial investigation into alleged human rights violations that took place in Bangladesh during the uprising and sought first-hand information from all concerned in September.
