
Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority managing director Md Fazlur Rahman at a discussion on Tuesday said that 75 per cent of the capital’s residences would be brought under sewerage coverage by 2030 after completing the ongoing treatment plant projects.
He said that the only sewage treatment plant of Dhaka WASA, Pagla Sewage Treatment Plant, which was established in 1968 was now operating with only 20 per cent of its capacity.
Wave Foundation organised the event titled ‘Support for enhancing accountability in water and sanitation sector to address risks of WASH’ in the capital’s Department of Public Health Engineering building.
Fazlur said that the Dhaka WASA was preparing new sewage treatment plants at Uttara, Mirpur and Keranignaj.
The project would be completed by 2030 and the plant would bring 75 per cent of the city under sewerage coverage.
WASH activists at the discussion said that WASH was still the most neglected sector in the country.
They blamed lack of accountability and knowledge gap for the situation.
They said that a large number of people of the country were out of sanitation and safe water network while the rest hardly got safely managed WASH.
Wave Foundation founding executive director Mohsin Ali said that none of the government had given proper attention to WASH.
DPHE chief engineer Tushar Mohon Shadhu Khan said that water accessibility was improved significantly, but the waste water management could not be improved over the years.
Among others, local government joint secretary Md Moniruzzaman, BUET professor Mashfiqus Salehin and WaterAid policy and advocacy adviser Fayezuddin Ahmed spoke the event moderated by Wave foundation deputy director Kaniz Fatima.
