The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed a High Court order granting bail to former Awami League lawmaker Jannat Ara Henry and her husband, Shamim Talukder, until January 6.

The couple was arrested on October 2 in connection with the murders of three individuals in Sirajganj town on August 4, a day before Sheikh Hasina was ousted as prime minister during a student-led mass uprising.


The couple was accused of ordering and financing Awami League leaders and activists to kill the victims participated in the student-led mass uprising, the prosecution alleged.聽

Justice Md Rezaul Haque, sitting as the vacation judge in the chamber, issued the stay after hearing a petition filed by the state, seeking permission to appeal the December 15 High Court order granting bail to the accused.

Deputy attorneys general Zahirul Islam Suman, SM Iftekhar Uddin Mahmud, and Jamila Momtaz represented the state during the hearing, while lawyer Cumar Debul Dey appeared on behalf of Jannat Ara Henry and her husband.

The couple face three separate murder charges stemming from the violence surrounding the mass uprising that culminated in the ouster of Sheikh Hasina-led regime and her fleeing to India.

On August 22, the families of the victims filed the three cases against Henry, her husband and local Awami League leaders and activists.聽
