Police foiled an attempt to traffic 66 people, including 37 children and 11 women, to Malaysia by sea and detained five members of a human trafficking ring early Sunday.

The arrested are Md Rashed, 25, of Teknaf Municipality, Saleh Ahmed, 35 and his brother Nurul Kabir, 27, of Baharchara Union, Syed Alam, 24 of Baharchara Union and Kamrul Islam alias Md Shipon, 32, of Sandwip Upazila, said officer in-charge of Teknaf police station Mohammad Gias Uddin.


During the operation, 66 people were rescued, 61 of whom were Rohingyas and five Bangladeshi nationals.

‘Among the rescued, 18 are men, 11 are women and 37 are children,’ said OC Gias Uddin.

He said that acting on a tip off, a team of police conducted drive at a house of Abdul Alim at Baharchara Union hill area of Teknaf and rescued them early Sunday.

Police also seized four rounds of bullets and two locally made weapons from their possession.

A case was filed with police station concerned in this connection.
