12 recorded since formation of interim govt

At least 21 extrajudicial killings had been reported in 2024 and of them, 12 were reported since the Professor Muhammad Yunus-led interim government took oath on August 8 after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5.


This was revealed in a report titled ‘Human Rights Situation 2024’ by the rights group Ain O Salish Kendra published on Tuesday.

Of the total extrajudicial killings the year, six were killed by police torture, three shot dead by police, one committed suicide in police custody, one was killed in Rapid Action Battalion custody, one killed in reported crossfire with the Border Guard Bangladesh, seven were killed during arrest by Joint Forces drives and after the arrest, one was killed being tortured by Bangladesh Navy and one killed in Department of Narcotics drives.

Elahi Shikder, 25, an accused of attack on military personnel in Gopalganj on August 10, died at Gopalganj Sadar Hospital at about 1:00am on September 8.

The accused was taken to the hospital after he had fallen sick at about 11:00pm on September 7.

ASK said that the family alleged that Elahi Sikder was killed by torture.

An unnatural death case was filed with the Gopalganj Sadar police station in this regard.

Supreme Court lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that 12 extrajudicial killings during the interim government was unacceptable as it went against the spirit of student-led mass uprising.

‘It seemed that nothing was changed but perpetrators and victims. We have heard that the extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances were perpetrated by either directive from the high-ups of the Awami League government or those happened were in their knowledge,’ he added.

On September 10, five people were detained in a joint operation at Gobindi village of Saghata in Gaibandha and taken to a hospital few hours after their arrests. Of them, Soharab Hossain Appel, 35, and Shafiqul Islam, 45, died at the hospital.

Shafiqul died at Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital while Soharab died at Gaibandha General Hospital in the early hours of September 11.

Another person named Md Faruk Hossain was killed on January 15 at a city hospital after he was detained by the police in the Lalbagh area.

Family members of Faruk alleged that he was tortured physically and admitted to a hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.

‘Without specific charges, these individuals were sometimes detained to obtain information about other suspects,’ the rights body said.
