The police arrested Omar Faruk Shuvo, a suspended co-coordinator of the Student Movement Against Discrimination, in Feni on Tuesday night on fraud charges, extortion and defamation in a case filed against him.
A court sent him to jail after he was produced before it on Wednesday, said Feni model police officer-in-charge Marma Singh Tripura.
The police said that Shuvo was arrested at around 11:00pm near Feni model police station in a case filed against him by Siddiqur Rahman on behalf of his son, Azizur Rahman Rizvi, a finance student at Dhaka University.
In August, Shuvo, son of Nuruzzaman from village Jagatjibonpur under Farhadnagar union of Feni Sadara, was suspended from his position as student movement co-coordinator in Feni.
Over the past few months, however, Shuvo was seen attending various programmes identifying himself as a ‘coordinator’.
Earlier, Shuvo allegedly demanded extortion from Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, suspended principal of Feni Alia Kamil Madrassah, by assuring him that he would be reinstated in his position. A phone record regarding his asking for extortions went viral.
