The students of the seven colleges affiliated to Dhaka University on Saturday demanded that the authorities must not hold any further admission tests as long as they were affiliated to the university.
The students accused the university administration of taking hasty preparation to release admission forms for the seven colleges after students opposed any more admission under its affiliation.
Abdur Rahman, a student of Dhaka College, at a press conference held on the college premises read out a written statement on behalf of the students of the affiliated colleges, raising a five-point demand.
The demands are: an official declaration from Dhaka University that no further admission tests will be conducted under its affiliation; the newly formed expert committee in consultation with the principals of the colleges and relevant stakeholders will conduct the admission process for 2024–25 session; the expert committee must reduce the number of seats by half or more to ensure quality education; the committee will coordinate with Dhaka University administration to prevent session jam; faculties of the seven college will evaluate the answer scripts of their students as Dhaka University teachers do not take their classes.
Students held a brief rally on the Dhaka College campus, announcing that they would call for tough movement if their demands were not met.
The education ministry on December 29, 2024 formed a high level expert committee to prepare an outline to cancel the affiliation and set up an independent institutional structure equivalent to a university in four months. But the students demanded the outline for an independent university in one month.
The seven colleges—Dhaka College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, Eden Mohila College, Government Bangla College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Government Titumir College, and Kabi Nazrul Government College—were affiliated to Dhaka University in 2017 before which they were under National University.
Currently, 1.67 lakh students are studying under these colleges.
Earlier, students of the seven colleges blocked road crossings, boycotted all academic activities and staged demonstrations to press home their demands for a separate autonomous university.
