The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit on Sunday sought the bank account details of 21 more journalists after the similar request for 12 journalists past week.

The crackdown comes after deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.


The list of 21 journalists includes Saiful Alam, editor of Jugantor, Pranab Saha, chief news editor of DBC News, Hasan Zahid Tushar, former deputy press secretary to the former prime minister, M Shamsur Rahman, chief editor and CEO of Independent TV, Mamun Abdullah, news editor of Independent TV, Animesh Kar, special correspondent of Independent TV, Ruhul Amin Russell, managing editor of Bangladesh Pratidin, Mahmud Hasan, deputy editor of Bangladesh Pratidin, Zafar Ahmed, senior reporter of Khola Kagoj, MG Kibria Chowdhury, editor of Jatiya Arthonitee, Dipak Chowdhury, chief reporter of Amader Shomoy.com and Amader Orthoneeti, Akhil Kumar Poddar, head of input at ETV, Jhumur Bari of Ekattor TV, Ziadur Rahman, editor of Ekushe Sangbad.com, Angur Nahar Monty, special correspondent of Kaler Kantho, Nasir Uddin Sathi, chairman of My TV, Mahmud Al Faisal, head of news at SA TV, Rashed Kanchan, executive director of SA TV, Shahnaz Siddiqui, senior reporter at BSS, Rashed Chowdhury of ETV, and Rama Prasad of Samakal.

Banks were asked to provide details of the listed individuals’ accounts, including those of their spouses and children, along with KYC documents, account opening forms, and transaction records.

Earlier, on December 30, the BFIU sought account information of 12 journalists, including Subash Chandra Badal, former managing director of Journalist Welfare Trust, Arifur Rahman Dolan of The Dhaka Post, Nurul Islam Hasib, special correspondent of Bangladesh Post, Dip Azad, chief news editor of the Nagarik TV, Abul Kalam Azad, former managing director and chief editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Md Omor Faruque, deputy chief news editor of BSS, Zafar Wazed, former director general of the Press Institute of Bangladesh, Hossen Ara Mamata Islam Soma, special correspondent of the Channel I, Obaidul Kabir Molla, deputy editor The Daily Janakantha, Abed Khan, editor of The Daily Jagaran, Ajoy Dasgupta, former deputy editor of The Daily Samakal, and Syed Ishtiaque Reza, chief editor of Global TV.
