A large group of dismissed trainee sub-inspectors of the Bangladesh Police demonstrated for the second day on Monday in front of the Bangladesh Secretariat, the country’s administrative headquarters, demanding reinstatement in their jobs.
After protesting outside the secretariat for about two hours, a delegation of three protesters went inside and met home affairs ministry senior secretary Nasimul Gani.
After meeting with home secretary, the protesters had withdrawn their procession saying that they got an assurance to get their jobs back.
They first gathered in front of Gate 4 of the secretariat at about 10:00am on Monday but later they took position on the opposite side of the secretariat.
Earlier on Sunday, they held a sit-in in front of the secretariat with the same demand.
They alleged that 321 trainee sub-inspectors were sacked in four phases on silly allegations on the eve of their joining the police force after completing one year or more than a year training period without any payment.
‘The allegations are baseless, unjustified and absurd. There was no disorder at the academy. The authorities should check the academy’s CCTV footage and show it to all,’ said Munmun Akter, a sacked trainee SI of the 40th batch.
Naizu Akhter, another sacked SI, said, ‘Most of us come from lower-middle-class families. Our families sacrificed so much for us to secure this job but we lost our jobs on baseless allegations.’
Including the eight trainee SIs sacked on January 2, a total of 321 trainee SIs out of 823 were sacked for breaching discipline during various sessions of training programmes after the fall of the Awami League-led autocratic regime on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.
On October 21, 2024, at least 252 trainee sub-inspectors, who were receiving basic training at Bangladesh Police Academy at Sardah in Rajshahi under the 40th outside cadet batch, were discharged allegedly for breaching discipline.
They were discharged 10 days before their graduation ceremony scheduled to be held on October 31, 2024.
