Discussants at an event said that a social revolutionary, Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, worked for the rights of people of the country in his entire life.

They made the remark at the 83rd anniversary of birth programme of the Independence Award recipient at Gono Bishwabidyalay at Savar in Dhaka on Tuesday.


Gono Bishwabidyalay, a concern of the Gonoshasthaya Kendra, organised a discussion and a book launching ceremony to mark the day.

Professor emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury said that Zafrullah Chowdhury worked for the people of the country in his life. ‘He could be a successful surgeon, or an affluent person but he worked for the rights of the people of the country.’

He also said that Zafrullah Chowdhury established all the institutions and made the people as their owners instead of his personal ownership. 

‘His works should be evaluated and people of the country should hold his ideology,’mentioned Serajul Islam Choudhury.

Gono Bishwabidyalay trustee board member and former vice-chancellor Abul Kasem Chowdhury said that Zafrullah Chowdhury was an alternative thinker who realised that without the development of the poor, no real development could be happened in the country.

Chaired by Gono Bishwabidyalay VC Md Abul Hossain, Gonoshasthaya Kendra trustee board chairman Professor Altafunnesa, trustee Shireen Haq and Bangla department head Mansur Musa, among others, spoke at the event.

Born on December 27, 1941, Zafrullah Chowdhury, a freedom fighter, founded Gonoshasthaya Kendra in 1972 to provide healthcare services to underprivileged communities in Bangladesh.

For his outstanding contribution to ensuring healthcare for the poor, he earned the title ‘Poor People’s Doctor’.

Zafrullah Chowdhury passed away on April 11, 2023.
