To advance medical research and thesis activities at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, the 5th edition of the book titled ABC of Research Methodology and Biostatistics written by Professor Dr MD Mozammel Hoque was unveiled at the convention hall of the Super Specialised Hospital of BSMMU in Dhaka on Saturday.

Vice-chancellor of BSMMU, Professor Dr MD Shahinul Alam, was present as chief guest while Professor Dr Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, pro-VC for administration; Professor Dr Mohammad Mujibur Rahman Howlader, pro-VC for research and development; and Professor Dr Nahreen Akhter, treasurer of the university were present as special guest at the book launch ceremony, which was chaired by dean of the faculty of medicine, Professor Dr Shamim Ahmed, said a press release.


‘The book contains 26 chapters, including topics such as survival analysis, which demonstrate that BSMMU’s research activities are progressing,’ said Shahinul Alam, emphasizing that the primary mission of the university was knowledge generation, which required research.

Pointing out that research methodology involves structuring ideas, which is essential for research, he said, ‘Thus, this book will play a significant role in enhancing the university’s research activities and improving the quality of research.’

The keynote address was read by resident doctor Sharif Al-Nur on behalf of Professor Shubhagata Chowdhury. In his written address, Shubhagata Chowdhury praised Professor Dr Mozammel Haque for making complex topics in medical research and statistics accessible, particularly for undergraduate and postgraduate students. ‘His clear and simple explanations have made the book highly popular among students and faculty, which has led to the release of five editions.’

In his welcome speech, Mozammel Hoque stated that the ABC of Research Methodology and Biostatistics book will contribute significantly to the research activities of medical educators and students. He noted that it will be beneficial for students completing their thesis, writing dissertations, and for examiners as well. He also pointed out the critical need for such books in medical research, which led him to begin writing this book in 2001, with the first edition being published in 2009.

Other speakers at the event included the dean of the faculty of surgery, Professor Dr Mohammad Ruhul Amin, and pediatric specialist Professor Dr Mahbub Motanabbi. Faculty members, doctors, and resident students from the university were also present at the ceremony.

Professor Dr Mozammel Haque is a professor in the biochemistry department at the BSMMU. He obtained his MBBS degree from Dhaka Medical College and MPhil and FCPS degrees in Biochemistry from BSMMU and BCPS. He has received specialised training in research methodology and biostatistics from the Public Health College in Manila, Philippines.

He is actively involved in research and teaches biostatistics to postgraduate medical students. He has also been serving as a resource person for BCPS’s dissertation writing, research methodology, and biostatistics training programs for doctors since 2005.

Professor Dr Mozammel Haque has also written two other highly sought-after books on complex subjects titled ABC of Medical Biochemistry and ABC of Arterial Blood Gas and Acid-Base Disorder.
