University Grants Commission of Bangladesh member Professor Masuma Habib at a workshop on Monday called on the interim government to increase the budget allocation for the education sector in the next fiscal year to ensure the necessary infrastructure and suitable environment for conducting quality applied research.

She said this while speaking as chief guest at the Research Proposal Evaluation Workshop for the 2023-2024 fiscal year in the field of engineering science under the Science and Technology department held at the UGC auditorium in Dhaka, said a press release.


She said that to make world-class university, the budget allocation for the education and research sectors must be increased. ‘There is only one Nobel laureate in our country. If the budget in this sector is increased, our researchers will be able to win more Nobel prizes through new innovations.’

Masuma Habib expressed hope that chief adviser and education adviser would play a positive role in increasing the budget allocation in the education sector.

‘The new generation should be developed in a research-oriented and science-minded manner. New knowledge should be created through research,’ she said, requesting the government to reintroduce travel grants for university teachers to attend international conferences.

‘By attending these conferences, teachers get the opportunity to connect with researchers from different countries of the world, improve their skills and exchange new research ideas.’

She called on the project evaluators to select research projects that are beneficial for the country.

Research and grants management division of the UGC organised the workshop, which was chaired by director of department, Ferdous Zaman. 

Moderated by UGC senior assistant director Bishwanath Biswas, Mohammad Kabirul Hasan, additional director of the department, spoke at the event.

Senior teachers and researchers from various public universities evaluated the project proposals at the workshop.
