Sacked trainee police sub-inspectors continued their fast unto death programme for the second consecutive day on Tuesday in front of the secretariat, the country’s administrative headquarters, in Dhaka, demanding reinstatement of their jobs.

They said that they would continue their movement until the government issued a gazette notification reinstating their jobs.

‘We have no other option but to choose job or death,’ said a sacked trainee SI, Tariqul Islam.

Earlier on Monday, a four-member team of the protesters met home adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

Md Alamgir Hossain, who was in the four-member team, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday that the home adviser asked them to be patient.

‘We will not halt our movement until the government issues a gazette notification reinstating our jobs,’ he said.

Alamgir said that several protesters had fallen sick as they had been continuing the hunger strike for more than 24 hours.

They began the fast unto death programme at 4:00pm on Monday after holding a sit-in programme in front of the secretariat earlier on that day.

Their fast unto death programme continued till filing the report at 9:00pm.

Earlier, they held human chain programmes in front of the secretariat on January 5 and 6.

Including the eight trainee SIs sacked on January 2, a total of 321 trainee SIs out 823 were sacked for breaching discipline during various sessions of training programmes after the fall of Awami League-led autocratic regime on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.

On October 21, 2024, at least 252 trainee sub-inspectors, who were receiving basic training at the Bangladesh Police Academy at Sardah in Rajshahi under the 40th outside cadet batch, were discharged allegedly for breaching discipline.

They were discharged 10 days before their graduation ceremony, scheduled to be held on October 31. The graduation ceremony, however, was later deferred and is scheduled for today.

A total of 480 trainee SIs are scheduled to attend the concluding parade today at the Bangladesh Police Academy at Sarda in Rajshahi.

‘Inspector general of police Baharul Alam is scheduled to attend the parade as chief guest,’ said Police Headquarters assistant inspector general of police Enamul Haque Sagar.
