
Purangit Mahalder, an associate professor of the Bangla department at Rajshahi University, who sustained serious injuries to his head in a road accident on Monday, died early Tuesday. He was 40.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Professor Purangit breathed his last at 2:35am while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, confirmed RU public relations office administrator professor Akhtar Hossain Mazumder.
He said that professor Purangit fell victim to the accident when he went to pick his daughter, a Class II student, from her school by his scooter on Monday afternoon.
‘As his scooter slipped on sand, he fell and hit a lamp post, sustaining head injuries.
Later, he was taken to the RMCH where he died while undergoing treatment,’ he added.
Professor Akhtar said that after fellow colleagues and students paid tribute to the professor in front Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Academic Building, his body was taken to his native village in Dumuria of Khulna for last rites.
RU vice-chancellor professor Saleh Hasan Naqib and pro-vice-chancellors– professor Mohammad Main Uddin, and professor Farid Uddin Khan– expressed profound shock at his death, said a press release.
