The construction works of a Jagannath University second campus in Keraniganj have been handed over to the Bangladesh Army amid student protests.

JnU vice-chancellor Rezaul Karim made the announcement at a press conference at the secretariat on Wednesday following a meeting between the education ministry officials, the UGC and army representatives.

The final handover is expected to be completed within three working days, said the VC.

Protesting students, however, declared that the on-going shutdown at JnU would continue until they received a formal written resolution from the education ministry.

The VC elaborated on the construction works, stating that the first phase of the second campus project is underway.

The army will assess the progress, prepare a roadmap, and finalise a revised detailed project proposal within three days, the VC said, adding that the project also includes constructing the steel-structure buildings for the Bani Bhaban and Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall, which the army has tentatively agreed to undertake.

‘This marks a significant achievement for the university,’ said Rezaul.

He also appealed to the students to withdraw the shutdown.

Earlier, the students staged several demonstrations, including rallies, hunger strike and campus shutdown to press home their demands.
