
Bangladesh Open University is committed to establishing non-discrimination, safety and equal rights in education for third-gender students, said the university vice-chancellor, ABM Obaidul Islam, on Thursday.
The VC made the remark at a meeting with BOU third-gender students at his office in Dhaka, said a press release.
Obaidul said that any third-gender citizen would be able to pursue education at BOU with dignity.
‘BOU is committed to establish non-discrimination, safety and equal rights in education,’ said Obaidul.
At the meeting, the third-gender students highlighted the discrimination and barriers they face in their daily lives.
In response, the VC assured them that BOU would provide a supportive and respectful educational environment where they would not face any adverse circumstances.
The pro-VC Sayeed Ferdous emphasised the importance of collective efforts by all genders for the country’s development.
Among the third-gender representatives, Sustho Jibon chairperson Parboti Ahmed, Sompurna president Joya Sikder, Sachetan Hizra Odhikar Juba Sangha chief executive officer S Srabanti and others were present at the meeting.
