The Bangladesh Railway on Tuesday freed about 5 acres of land by evicting over 200 illegal makeshift structures including houses and shops at Tejgaon area in the capital.

The railway conducted the drive following a recent railways ministry public announcement issued on December 5.
In the announcement, the ministry asked all people and institutions concerned to remove their illegal establishments and structures from railway land within next five days, warning that the ministry would take stern legal action to free its land if they fail to comply.
The railway started eviction drives at different places in the country in past month.
On Tuesday, Dhaka divisional estate officer and executive magistrate Md Nasir Uddin Mahmud started the drive in the Tejgaon area in the capital at around 11:00am.
‘During the drive, we evicted 200 to 250 makeshift illegal structures including houses and other structures in two to two and half an hours,’ he said.
The railway officials could not evicted a brick-built chicken firm due to some locals’ intervention.
A railway official, seeking anonymity, said that they did not have enough forces to evict the firm and some local political leaders also intervened in the drive.
They gave one month time to the owner of the firm for relocation, he added.
According to a report published by the railways ministry in May 2024 Bangladesh Railway has total amount 61,821 acres of land and out of that the railway is using 30,286 acres.
