The veterinary faculty students of Sylhet Agricultural University staged demonstrations for the second day on Wednesday boycotting academic activities to press home their five-point demand, including enhancement of an intern’s monthly allowance to Tk 20,000 from Tk 9,000.

They staged a sit-in and formed a human chain in front of the faculty building between 10:00am and 12 noon boycotting the scheduled classes, campus sources said

The agitating students alleged that interns of other universities in the country are given Tk 20,000 as a monthly allowance while the SAU interns were given only Tk 9,000.

They also complained that they were not being provided with travel and dining allowances like the interns of other universities.

A veterinary faculty student, Rabeya Ferdous, said that they submitted a memorandum to the university vice-chancellor on January 9 with a seven-day deadline to meet the demands.

Their other demands are providing a student with Tk 300 per day as an allowance, preparing a four-month roadmap for internship programmes and informing the students at least one month ago of any amendment, disbursing the intern allowance at the end of every month and arranging externships in other countries as an alternative to India, the agitators said.

The agitating students claimed that they would continue to boycott the academic activities and stage demonstrations on the campus until their demands were met.

The SAU vice-chancellor professor Md Alimul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they talked to the veterinary students about their demands. ‘We have nothing to do in this regard as the University Grants Commission determines the interns’ allowances,’ he said.
