A businessman was shot dead, and another individual was injured in an attack by unidentified assailants at Raujan upazila in Chattogram on Friday.
The deceased is Mohammad Jahangir, 55, son of Abu Sayed, hailed from Niramishpara in the Noapara area of Raujan upazila.
He was the owner of Maksud Community Centre at Noapara and also involved in dry fish trade in Chattogram鈥檚 Asadganj area.
The injured individual, Muhammad Abbas, 38, is the manager of Jahangir鈥檚聽 community centre and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chattogram city.
The incident took place when the victims were on their way to say jumma prayers at around 1:00pm at a local mosque in the Noapara area of Raujan upazila, said AKM Shafiqul Alam Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of the Raujan police station.
According to local sources, Jahangir had travelled from Chattogram city to his village home earlier that day by motorcycle.
While heading to the Asad Ali Matobbor Bari Jame Mosque with Abbas on the same motorcycle, they were attacked by miscreants.
The attackers first struck Jahangir with sticks, and later shot him, the Raujan OC said, adding that Abbas was injured in the attack while trying to resist. Both of them were taken to nearest Evercare Hospital in Chattogram, where the doctor on duty declared Jahangir dead.
OC Shafiqul said that the family of the deceased claimed that Jahangir was not involved in any political organisation.
鈥榃e are investigating the motive behind this killing, the OC said, adding that no case has been filed by the victim鈥檚 family yet.
