The mathematics department of the University of Dhaka held an orientation programme for the first year undergraduate students at the Mathematics Building of the university on Wednesday.

DU academic pro-vice-chancellor Professor Mamun Ahmed was present as chief guest at the event, which was presided over by chairperson of the department Professor Shapla Shirin.


Pirojpur University of Science and Technology VC Professor Md Shahidul Islam, dean of the DU faculty of science, Professor Abdus Salam and president of the Dhaka University Mathematics Alumni Association Mohammad Tajul Islam spoke as special guests at the event.

Mamun Ahmed emphasised on presenting mathematics to the students in a simple and understandable way.

‘Our involvement with mathematics starts from the beginning of our educational life. The importance of mathematics in personal life is also immense. Mathematics increases the analytical power and skills of a person,’ he said.

Mentioning that mathematical knowledge plays an important role in making the right decisions on various issues, he said the DU had the opportunity to participate in various co-curricular activities, including sports and cultural activities.

He urged the students to make the most of these facilities and develop into skilled, capable and responsible citizens.

Pointing out that students have a kind of fear of mathematics, Shahidul Islam said, ‘To remove this fear, the teachers and students of the department have to play an effective role so that they can be successful in their careers.’

He urged the students to acquire knowledge of artificial intelligence and data science in the current era of science and technology and to be vigilant in ensuring that students play a leading role in establishing good governance.

A cultural programme was also presented by the students of the department at the event. Â
