
Eminent environment and human rights activists in a statement on Wednesday demanded punishment for attackers who injured Department of Environment director Md Sawqat Ali.
The activists also demanded safety for the employees engaged in environment protection activities.
Among others Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation founding president Sultana Kamal, Nijera Kori coordinator Khushi Kabir, Transparency International Bangladesh executive director Iftekharuzzaman, Association for Land Reform and Development executive director Shamsul Huda, Bangladesh Institute of Planners’ president Adil Mohamamed Khan and Stamford University professor Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder were named in the statement.
The activists also demanded arrest of the others involved in the attack.
On Sunday, the DoE director for enforcement and monitoring and a deputy secretary of the government Sawqat Ali were injured in an attack by workers during a drive at a polythene factory at Islambagh in capital’s Chawk Bazar area.
At least 40 sacks of polythene were seized from a rented house belonging to Kabir Hossain and Ilyas Sardar in West Islambagh area during the operation.
Later, when the seized items were being loaded onto a pickup truck, 150–200 people attacked the team with sticks, bricks, and iron rods, according to the press release.
Following the incident, DoE inspector Md Motaher Hossain filed a case with the Chawk Bazar model police station.
