A Jahangirnagar University unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader seized at least 10 Rajdhani Paribahan buses on the Dhaka-Aricha highway on Thursday night after a bus allegedly hit his relative’s car.

Eyewitnesses said that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed JCD activists, led by joint convener Selim Reza, began stopping buses near the JU’s Bishmail gate around 7:30pm and continued until midnight, causing traffic disruption.

The buses were released after getting assurances of compensation.

‘A Rajdhani Paribahan bus hit my relative Murad’s car and damaged its side mirror. We moved some buses aside, but did not block the road,’ Selim Reza said.

He also alleged that when they asked for compensation, the bus authorities responded disrespectfully. ‘So, we took action.’

Driver of the bus, Zahid Hasan, opposed Reza’s claim, saying, ‘They took our keys and told us to park the buses across the road, effectively blocking it.’

Proctor of the JU AKM Rashidul Alam said that the issue was resolved after discussions between the parties.

The convener and member secretary of the newly formed JU JCD committee refused to comment in this regard.

Denying the allegations of misbehaviour, the transport company representative Mezbah Uddin said, ‘Company owner agreed to provide the compensation.’
