Four Shariatpur-based journalists were injured in an attack by a group of miscreants in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in the district town on Monday reportedly for publishing news over the negligence of doctors at a hospital.
The injured journalists are Sohag Khan Sujan of Samakal, Bidhan Mojumder Oni of New24 Television, Nayan Das of Bangla TV, and Saiful Islam Akash of Desh TV.
Witnesses said that the attackers swooped on Sohag at about 1:00pm and when Bidhan, Nayan and Saiful tried to save Sohag, they were also attacked.
Locals said that reports on the negligence of doctors at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital were published by some media outlets, including Samakal.
On Monday, Sohag and some journalists had an argument with a clinic owner, Nuruzzaman Sheikh, at the hospital that led to the attack, they said.
Sohag was admitted to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital and other injured journalists took primary treatment there.
‘Nuruzzaman Sheikh was angry with me as a news story against the negligence of the doctors at the hospital was published in my newspaper,’ Sohag said.
He alleged that Nuruzzaman and his men attacked him with knives and hammers due to publishing the news.
Palang model police station officer-in-charge Helal Uddin said that no case was filed with his police station and none was arrested in this connection until filing this report at 10:00pm on Monday.
