A sub-inspector of Uttara West police station was withdrawn early Wednesday, hours after Tuesday evening’s detention of three students of the Students Against Discrimination in the capital’s Uttara.

SI Abu Sayeed was closed after the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s deputy commissioner for Uttara division Rawnaq Jahan said.

The action was taken based on complaints from the students and for bringing the three students to the police station, she said.

She said that a departmental proceeding was initiated against Sayeed.

The incident took place at about 7:00pm on Tuesday when a team of Uttara West police detained three students from its jurisdiction after allegations of extortion were filed with the Uttara East police station, according to the police and witnesses.

A group of students and people allegedly attacked the police station, according to witnesses.

Rawnaq Jahan, however, said that it was not an attack on the police station. ‘The chaos spread due to a misunderstanding between the police and the students,’ she added.

United News of Bangladesh reported that the students of the Students Against Discrimination held a meeting on Gausul Azam Avenue in Sector 13 of Uttara Tuesday afternoon.

During the gathering, a police team led by SI Abu Sayeed detained three students—Asiful Haque Robin of IUB, Akash of Uttara Town Degree College, and Bappi of BIST in Gazipur.
