A Chattogram court on Sunday put former Awami League lawmaker from Chattogram 15 constituency Abu Reza Muhammad Nezamuddin Nadvi on two-day remand in connection with the murder of an Islami Chhatra Shibir activist during the quota reform student movement.
The fourth court of Chattogram metropolitan magistrate Md Abu Bakar Siddik granted the remand in the morning, said AAM Humayun Kabir, deputy commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police.Â
‘Police produced Abu Reza Muhammad Nezamuddin Nadvi before the court this morning seeking five-day remand for him. The judge, however, granted two-day remand after the hearing,’ the police official added.Â
According to the case statement, on July 16, Faisal Ahmed Shanto, an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir, was shot during a quota reform protest in the Muradpur area under the Panchlaish police station in the port city. He was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.Â
Following the incident, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Panchlaish unit amir, Mahbubul Hasan Rumi, filed a murder case with the Panchlaish police station.Â
Nadwi, a former Jamaat-e-Islami leader who later joined the Awami League, was arrested in Dhaka on December 15 after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5.
Abu Reza Nadwi served as a lawmaker from the Chattogram 15 constituency in the 10th and 11th parliamentary elections in 2014 and 2018 respectively on the Awami League ticket.
He, however, lost the 12th parliamentary elections last year to independent candidate MA Motaleb.
