A former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader was seriously injured after allegedly being shot by a group of attackers at the Raujan upazila in Chattogram on Saturday.
Police suspected that the attack might have happened due to factional conflict.Â
The incident took place in Uttar Gujra village under Gujra union on the day.
The victim is Piyar Mohammad Chowdhury Babu, 38, hailed from Raujan Sadar union. He was a former member of the Chattogram North District Chhatra Dal.
Babu is currently involved in Bangladesh Nationalist Party politics and is known to be a follower of the party’s central vice-chairman, Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury.
According to local sources, Babu visited a temple in Uttar Gujra to inspect the progress of a government-funded riverbank embankment project when he was shot at close range.
Babu is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chattogram city, Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Raujan police said.
‘Babu, a former Chhatra Dal leader now involved with the BNP, also runs businesses. We suspect that the attack may be linked to internal factional conflict,’ the OC said, adding that efforts are on to arrest those responsible for the attack.
