Students of Barishal University staged a protest on Tuesday, demanding the implementation of their 22-point, accusing the administration of authoritarianism and condemning attempts to rehabilitate pro-Awami League activists on campus.

The protest, held in front of the university’s main gate at about 1:30pm, disrupted traffic on the Barishal-Kuakata highway for over an hour.

During the demonstration, students criticised the administration for failing to allocate adequate budget for classroom and residential hall facilities, filing false charges against students, and failing to hold Chhatra League activists accountable for violent incidents.

Student leaders Sujoy Shuvo, Mosharraf Hossain, and Shahidul Islam Shahed, among others, spoke at the demonstration.

They said that the environment was being disrupted due to the authoritarian attitude of the administration. In addition, there was an attempt to rehabilitate ‘Awami fascists’.

Instead of prosecuting the leaders and activists of the terrorist Chhatra League, the administration had filed terrorism cases against the protesting students, they added.

The speakers demanded the immediate withdrawal of the cases and urged the administration to take effective measures to meet their demands.

They warned that students would continue their united movement until their demands were met.
