
Twenty-six workers who were reportedly kidnapped from remote rubber plantations at Lama upazila in Bandarban were released in the early hours of Tuesday.
‘Kidnappers released the workers in an unknown location at around 1:30am on Tuesday,’ said Lama police officer-in-charge Shahadat Hossain.
Responding to a question, the OC said that 10 workers returned home and 16 were admitted to hospital as their health was not well without detailing much.
‘We are collecting information about the incident,’ said Shahadat.
Earlier, the workers were reportedly kidnapped from rubber plantations in Murungjhiri area of Lama upazila in Bandarban in the early hours of Sunday.
An armed group in the hill district was suspected to have been involved in the kidnapping and demanded ransom for the release of the abducted workers, said the OC on Sunday.
Responding to a question regarding the ransom, the OC said that details would be known after collecting information from the workers.
Members of law enforcement agencies and the Bangladesh Army launched a rescue operation on Sunday, the OC said, adding that the kidnappers released the workers in an unknown location.
Police have identified 20 out of 26 workers and are collecting information of the others, mentioned the OC.
The victims are Faruk, 26, Ayub Ali, 26, Siddiq, 40, Abdul Khaleq, 20, Abdul Majed, 17, Monirul Islam, 30, Ziaur Rahman, 45, Mobarak, 25, Harun, 30, Ramiz Uddin, 32, Syed Nur, 28, Kayser, 38, Monir Hossain, 35, Imran, 17, Manjurul, 30, Afsar Ali, 25, Khairul Amin, 30, Abu Bakkar, 28, Razzak, 33, and Mobin, 25.
