Deputy commissioners from across Bangladesh on Tuesday were asked to maintain the law and order situation, contain the spiralling of prices of essential commodities and ensure proper public services.
The instructions came from special assistant to the chief adviser retired lieutenant general Abdul Hafiz at a meeting organised between the district administrators, defence ministry and Armed Forces Division as part of the three-day DC conference concluded on the day.
‘I told the DCs that people want three things from the government—they want to sleep and move outside home peacefully, buy things at affordable prices and receive public services without hassle. So do these three things as DCs are the government in districts,’ Abdul Hafiz told the media after the meeting.Â
He said that 1,400 firearms and 2.5 lakh rounds were yet to be recovered, which was a concern.
‘About 6,000 firearms were looted, three-fourths of which were recovered,’ he added.
Abdul Hafiz said that the Kuki-Chin National Front’s criminal activities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts severely disrupted tourism in several upazilas.Â
‘Many youths in the Hill Tracts are becoming unemployed and getting involved in criminal activities,’ he mentioned.
He said that the operations against the Kuki-Chin National Front would continue till the outfit is completely quelled.
Hafiz further said that seven army troops were killed and many were injured during operations against the KNF.
Deputy commissioners at the meeting proposed introducing universal military training for youths who could be engaged in the country’s defence activities and in conducting special operations against terrorists in remote areas of certain districts.
Armed Forces Division principal staff officer Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hassan, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Air Force high officials, among others, were present at the meeting.
