Visiting International Food Policy Research Institute director for the poverty, gender and inclusion unit, Daniel Gilligan observed that malnutrition and lack of access to high quality diets were among the leading challenges to food security in Bangladesh.

Stressing the importance of research-based policy support to minimise the challenge, he reaffirmed IFPRI’s commitment to support Bangladesh in gaining food security.

Talking to journalists at a Dhaka hotel on Thursday, Daniel discussed positive impacts of IFPRI’s research-based policy support in mitigating food shortage in Bangladesh.

On Saturday, Daniel is expected to chair IFPRI’s research session titled Enhancing Agricultural Growth, in the eighth SANEM Annual Economists’ Conference at BRAC Centre Inn in Dhaka.

The session would discuss strategies to boost agricultural growth to improve lives and livelihoods, promoting agricultural development through farm mechanisation and resource allocation.

On the same day, another session of the research organisation would highlight the importance of revamping social protection and improving the nutrition outcome.

Citing several researches on frequently happened extreme weather events in Bangladesh and some African countries, Daniel also discussed how research-based policy interventions helped affected communities to absorb the shocks of severe drought and flood.

IFPRI country representative for Bangladesh, Akhter Ahmed, also discussed the impacts of a World Food Programme-supported and IFPRI-designed Transfer Modality Research Initiative that reduced child stunting significantly in Bangladesh.

IFPRI Bangladesh officials, including its associate research fellow Moogdho Mahzab, were also present at the press conference.
