
Workers of a garment factory blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh national highway in Maleker Bari area in Gazipur city for about two and a half hours on Sunday, protesting at the dismissal of 76 workers of the factory.
The road blockade caused huge traffic congestion on both sides of the highway leading to terrible public suffering.
According to the police, agitating workers and local residents, when the workers of ‘That’s It’ garment factory, a concern of the Hamim Group, came to their workplace on Sunday morning and found a list of 76 of their fellows to be laid off, they began furious protests.Â
They occupied the nearby stretch of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at about 10:30am leading to over a hundred vehicles becoming stranded on both sides of the highway.
Some of the laid off workers alleged that their dismissal was unlawful and demanded reinstatement.
Upon information, members of the industrial police and other law enforcement agencies reached the spot.
Gazipur industrial police superintendent Mizanur Rahman said that the workers lifted the blockade from the road at about 1:00pm after a discussion with the owners who assured them of solving the situation.
Some of the workers said that they were planning to call protests again if their demand was not met.
