
A group of private university students on Wednesday night blocked Banglamotor overlooking the office of the Student Against Discrimination, in protest at the formation of the committee of the newly founded Bangladesh Gonotantraik Chhatra Sangsad and the scuffle occurred during its launching ceremony.
Over 50 students staged the blockade after 9:30pm, halting vehicular movement on the extremely busy Banglamotor-Shahbagh stretch of the road, causing terrible public suffering.
The blockade still continued as of 11:00pm when this report was filed.
One of the protesters, Shahjadi Fananna Kotha, said at the blockade that around 20 students were injured in the clash between the private university students and others of the new student organisation on the Dhaka University campus in the afternoon on the day.
She said that private university students were ignored in the committee of the new student organisation.
Denouncing the committee, she demanded justice for the attack on private university students, including the female ones, and formation of a new committee.
A group of leaders of the Student Against Discrimination that led the July-August mass uprising on Wednesday afternoon launched Bangladesh Gonotantraik Chhatra Sangsad at the university鈥檚 Madhu鈥檚 Canteen amid protests leading to a clash.
Abu Baker Majumder was announced as its convener and Zahid Ahsan as member secretary of the six-member central convening committee of Chhatra Sangsad.
The committee, which has all its members from two public universities, includes only one female member. Five of its members are from Dhaka University and one from Jahangirnagar University.
Besides the central committee, a six-member Dhaka University committee was also announced at the event.
Besides Abu Baker Majumder and Zahid Ahsan, four other members of the central convening committee are Touhid Mohammad Siam who was announced senior joint convener, Rifat Rashid senior joint member secretary, Tahmid Al Muddassir Chowdhury principal organiser, and Ashrefah Khatun spokesperson.
