Law enforcement and security agencies intensified patrolling and set up more checkpoints across the country on Thursday to rein in the upsurge of crimes.

The police, joint forces, Rapid Action Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh and Armed Police Battalion ran activities alongside Operation Devil Hunt, launched on February 8, to restore the runaway law and order situation.


In the past 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Thursday, 1,657 people were arrested on different crime charges, said a press release issued by the police headquarters. Of these people, 743 individuals who are mostly leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliates were held in Operation Devil Hunt, said the release.聽

At least 31,605 people, including 11,250 in Operation Devil Hunt, were arrested between February 8 and 8:00am Thursday.

Meanwhile, home affairs adviser, retired lieutenant general Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury inspected the Mirpur, Darussalam, Adabor and Mohammadpur police stations in the capital early Thursday and instructed law enforcement members to remain vigilant round the clock to maintain law and order.

During the visits he told journalists that a sub-inspector and a constable posted at the Gulshan police station were suspended for negligence in duty on Wednesday.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police in a press release on Thursday said that in its jurisdiction 550 patrol teams were deployed between midnight past Tuesday and 11:59pm Wednesday.

In Dhaka city, law enforcement agencies were seen checking people at different points on Thursday as the DMP set up 65 checkpoints and Armed Police Battalion installed 20 checkpoints across the capital.

The DMP release said that at least 256 people were arrested on the charges of mugging, robbery, extortion, theft and drug peddling during the operations conducted in the 24 hours. Also 65 cases were filed with different police stations in the DMP area in connection with these incidents.

Over the same 24-hour period, the police arrested 29 leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliates during a special drive in Chattogram, 抖阴精品 staff correspondent in the district reported.
