Police arrested Joydev Chowdhury Madhav, the recently expelled joint organising secretary of the Sylhet city unit of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, on Sunday in a case filed against him for extortion.

Joydev was accused of realising extortion money after kidnapping and torturing a street vendor in the case.


Madhav, 35, is son of Ajit Chowdhury in the Dariapara area in ​​Sylhet city, police said.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam confirmed the arrest to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

He said that a team of Sylhet Kotwali police in association with the Sunamganj police arrested Madhav at Devkona village under Shantiganj upazila in Sunamganj at noon.

Earlier on Saturday, a vegetable vendor Kajal Miah filed a case with the Kotwali police against eight people, including Madhav, accusing them of kidnapping him from the city and realising Tk 16,500 from him and demanding Tk 30,000 more as extortion.

The plaintiff stated in the case that Madhav led a group of people who kidnapped him from the footpath in front of the city’s zila parishad and took him to Sitara Mansion at Zindabazar.

The kidnappers then snatched Tk 16,500 from him at knifepoint and also demanded Tk 30,000 more as extortion.

The SMP officer said on Sunday afternoon that the Kotwali police were preparing to produce the arrested Juba Dal leader before the metropolitan magistrate court seeking its directive.

On Friday night, a group of street vendors blocked the Zinda Bazar road in the Sylhet city centre protesting at the alleged demand of extortion money from them and taking away two of their fellows for not paying the extortion.

Following the allegations, the central Juba Dal assistant office secretary Minhazul Islam Bhuiyan issued a press released midnight past Friday, expelling Madhav from the organisation.
