
Shahbagh police arrested Mostafa Asif, an assistant binder at the Dhaka University Central Library, on Wednesday evening for allegedly harassing a female student on her way to the university from Shahbagh.
The victim first reported the incident to the Dhaka University proctor’s office and later filed a case with Shahbagh police station.
Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed told a media outlet that the individual harassed the student on the street by making comments about her clothing.
The student initially posted about the incident on social media before filing a complaint with the proctor’s office.
Later on Wednesday afternoon, students identified the alleged harasser and brought him to the proctor’s office, where he admitted to harassing the student, he was then handed over to Shahbagh police, Said Dhaka University proctor.
The victim shared a detailed account of the incident on social media, posting a picture of the alleged harasser and writing, ‘This man harassed me today on my way from Shahbagh. He suddenly stopped me in the middle of the road and started saying that my dress was inappropriate, that I wasn’t covering myself properly, and so on.’
She further wrote that she was wearing a salwar, kameez, and orna, yet the man made inappropriate comments about her attire. When she attempted to call the proctor, he ran away.
Meanwhile a group of individuals, who identified themselves as Touhidi Janata, gathered at Shahbagh Police Station from early Thursday, demanding release of the alleged harasser.
They announced that they would remain there until the arrested individual was released. Even after 3:30am, they continued their sit-in.
Regarding the incident, Shahbagh Police Station officer-in-charge Md Khalid Mansur told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the accused was in their custody and that senior police officials are currently looking into the matter.
‘I can’t comment further on this incident. I will speak about it later,’ he added.
