A man, who was detained after police attacked a procession brought out by the banned organisation, Hizb ut-Tahrir, at Purana Paltan in the capital Dhaka on Friday, was released following the intervention of youth and sports ministry adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain.

The detained person was identified as Arman, a water supplier to roadside shops near Baitul Mukarram at Paltan.

Police said that the army detained Arman as a suspect and handed him over to the Detective Branch of police.

Upon receiving information, adviser Asif Mahmud went to the Detective Branch headquarters at about 4:30pm on Friday, leading to the release of the detainee.

Arman was then taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in Asif Mahmud’s car.

Police attacked the banned organisation’s ‘March for Khilafah’ procession programme on Friday. At that time, police and the army detained several people, including Arman.

A video footage of Arman along with police beating a Hizb ut-Tahrir member during clashes in the afternoon went viral on social media.

After freeing the detainee, adviser Asif Mahmud posted on his Facebook account that Arman was attacked and injured when he tried to help police.

Arman supplied water in the Baitul Mukarram area, Asif in his post said, adding that Arman was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
