The Bangladesh Democratic Students Council on Friday held a protest rally at Dhaka University in protest at operations of the banned organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir.

They claimed that the banned organisation was attempting to destabilise the country.

The organisation also protested at law enforcers’ failure to curb their activities.

The brief rally took place at around 7:30pm at the base of the Anti-Violence Raju Memorial Sculpture.

At the rally, Abdul Kader, convener of the Dhaka University unit of the Democratic Students Council, said that extremists were taking advantage of the opportunity for freedom of speech.

They are working to contribute to Hasina’s ideology, he added.

‘We will resist those who seek to implement Hasina’s agenda,’ said Kader.

BDSC’s DU unit chief organiser Hasib Al Islam said, ‘The banned extremist organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir has been conducting its activities in different parts of Dhaka for a long time, and today they have chanted slogans supporting extremism in a sacred place like Baitul Mukarram.’

He further claimed that the administration had only made a token effort to stop them.

He also said, ‘If any state forces or agencies attempt to destabilise the country, students will resist as we have not handed Bangladesh over to extremists, and we never will.’

Member secretary of the organisation, Zahid Ahsan criticised the inaction of the police, saying, ‘The same police who shot at us in July and August remained silent today.’

Bangladesh is a country of religious harmony and the aspirations and actions of Hizb ut-Tahrir have no connection with the Muslims of Bangladesh, said Zahid.

‘We will not allow any activity that benefits the Awami League to succeed,’ Zahid added.

The brief rally was conducted by Ashrefa Khatun, spokesperson of the organisation’s central committee.

The chief organiser of the central committee, Tahmid Al Mudassir Chowdhury, the spokesperson of the DU unit, Rafia Rehnuma Hridi, and others spoke at the rally.

Following the rally, the students brought out a protest procession from the base of the Anti-Violence Raju Memorial Sculpture that marched through different areas on the Dhaka University campus.
