At least four people, including a child, were injured as two groups of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party allegedly clashed in Rajshahi city on Friday night.
The injured are Rajshahi city Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal deputy sports affairs secretary Lovely Khatun, her two-and-a-half-year old daughter, special branch of police member Tofazzal Hossain, and railway employee Md Rony.
They took primary treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
According to the party insiders, Lovely and her followers on Thursday night surrounded a multi-storey building in the Kadirganj area of the city, suspecting that Rajshahi city Awami League’s Boalia (West) thana unit joint secretary Mostak Ahmed Babu, also known as Battery Babu, entered his apartment in that building.
Later, a joint force arrived and conducted a drive in the apartment but did not find Mostak inside although Mostak’s name was recorded in the security guard’s register as an entrant, and CCTV footage showed him entering the building with his wife and children.
Law enforcement agencies then cordoned off the building, and later they arrested Mostak’s brother Sabbir Babu at the premises.
Following the incident, followers of Rajshahi city Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal former member secretary Maruf Hossain Jibon carried out an attack on Lovely’s residence on the allegation that she held Maruf responsible for Mostak’s disappearance from his apartment, the party insiders said.
In protest, Lovely’s supporters vandalised Maruf’s office near the Darikharbona railway line, leading to a violent clash between the two groups.
The clash broke out at about 9:00am and continued till 11:00pm as it spread to Dorikharbona, Upashahar Mor, Rail Gate, Sapura, and Shalbagan areas in the city, with both groups chasing and counter-chasing each other.
Many individuals were seen carrying sharp weapons and several crude bombs were also exploded while three motorcycles, including one motorcycle of a journalist, were set on fire in the Darikharbona area.
Lovely Khatun told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that after they handed Mostak’s brother Sabbir Babu over to the police, Maruf Hossain Jibon offered her a proposal that she would be given Tk 5 lakh if she did not pursue the matter anymore.
‘When I rejected the offer, Maruf’s men carried out an attack on my house,’ she alleged.
JD leader Maruf Hossain, however, could not be reached for his comments despite repeated attempts over the phone.
Contacted, Mostak Ahammed, officer-in-charge of Boalia model police station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that none had lodged any complaint with the police station over the Friday night clash.
