At least 20 people were injured, including 15 with bullet hit, as two groups of villagers clashed over establishing dominance at Ranobhumi village under Derai in Sunamganj on Sunday.

People of the area said that there was a longstanding dispute between former Taral union parishad chairman Luthfur Rahman and Ashik Miah for establishing supremacy at the village, especially in the governing committees of the village mosque, madrassah and primary school.

On Thursday, supporters of the both groups had locked in an altercation over a piece of disputed land, they said.

As a sequel of the incident, relatives and supporters of both Luthfur and Ashik engaged in a clash on Sunday, leaving 20 people of the both sides injured, they added.

They also mentioned that 15 of the injured sustained bullet hits as the both groups’ leaders opened firing during the clash.

The injured were admitted to different private hospitals and clinics of Sunamganj and Sylhet after the incident.

Derai police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Abdur Razzak told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that police were deployed in the area to keep law and order under control.

‘All of the men fled the village after the deployment of police in the area,’ the OC said, adding that efforts were going on to arrest them.
