An activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was stabbed to death in Narayanganj’s Chashara Balurmat area on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Apurba, 25.
Narayanganj additional police superintendent (crime and operations) Tariq Al Mehedi said that he was stabbed following a heated argument with Samrat, a local youth, after a torch procession organised by the city unit JCD to protest rape and murder on Sunday night.
The procession which had started at the Masdair central Eidgah at 9:30pm ended in front of the Narayanganj Press Club.
When the participants were heading home, Samrat stopped Apurba.
Witnesses said that at one stage of altercation Samrat stabbed Apurba in the abdomen and he died from his injuries on the way to a local hospital.
Local people caught Samrat and handed him over to the police after giving him a beating.
Samrat, a 25-year-old from the Gola Chippa area, claimed he had no prior knowledge of Apurba’s political affiliation and said that the confrontation stemmed from a personal dispute.
Azizul Islam Rajib, former joint secretary of the Narayanganj city JCD, said that Apurba was one of their workers and condemned the attack.
‘Our procession was peaceful, but this senseless violence took a life. We are committed to ensuring justice for Apurba,’ Rajib said.
The body of the deceased was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
