Workers of a spinning mill blocked the Chandra-Nabinagar highway in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur for three hours Monday afternoon, demanding their three months’ unpaid wages.
Commuters and pedestrians were left suffering as both ends of the highway remained blocked beginning at 2:00pm.
Earlier, the workers of Chandara Spinning Mill Ltd staged a sit-in protest inside the factory premises in the morning, demanding their outstanding salaries.
As the management failed to provide any assurance regarding payments, the workers moved to the highway and started the blockade.
Later, joint security forces arrived at the scene at about 4:30pm and removed the agitators from the highway.
Vehicular movement managed to resume at about 5:00pm.
Kaliakair police station officer-in-charge Riyad Mahmud said that workers blocked the highway over three months of unpaid wages.
With the help of the army, they managed to remove them from the road and restore normal traffic flow, he added.
