Four new incidents of rape came to light since Thursday as new cases were filed in four districts stating that the victims were aged between seven and 18, two of them physically challenged.
The new rape cases emerged as the nation struggles to endure the shock from the death of the eight-year-old girl on Thursday, a week after she was raped while visiting her sister in-laws’ house in Magura town on March 6.
The latest incidents of rape highlighted authorities’ failure to protect women who have experienced a spike of violence and attacks against them recently.
Three of the new rapes occurred on Thursday while the fourth one happened on March 9. The fourth case was delayed because of the rape accused’s attempt to settle it through local arbitration.
The districts where the rapes occurred are Chapainawabganj, Barishal, Lalmonirhat and Sirajganj.
In Chapainawabganj, the police on Friday arrested three people for raping a physically-challenged eight-year-old child at Shibganj upazila in the district, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi.
The main accused is Md Sakhawat, 19, a resident of Kagmari Village under Shahbajpur union in the upazila.
Shibganj police station officer-in-charge Golam Kibria said that Sakhawat and two other teenagers forcibly took the 8-year-old speech-impaired girl to a nearby mango orchard while she was returning home from a nearby mosque on Thursday night and raped her.
Later, the local people detained the trio on Friday morning and handed them over to the police, he said, adding that victim’s father lodged a case.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal reported that the police arrested a person named Khokon Kabiraj, 35, for raping a disabled girl aged 18 in her house in Muladi upazila in the district on Thursday.
The victim was alone in the house when accused Khokon entered the house with a knife, police said, adding that he tied her hands and feet, and raped her, threatening to kill her.
The victim’s mother filed a case in this incident, Muladi police station officer-in-charge Momin Uddin said, adding that the victim was sent to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital on Friday for tests.
Meanwhile, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Lalmonirhat reported that police arrested a 22-year-old named Jahurul Molla Sagar for raping a seven-year-old child Thursday afternoon in Doani Pittifata village of Hatibandha upazila in the district.
Hatibandha police station officer-in-charge Mahmudun Nabi on Friday said that a case was filed Thursday night and the victim was undergoing treatment at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.
According to the case statements, Jahurul, who worked at a local Grameen Phone Tower, was visiting the victim’s house at Doani Pittifata village at about 5:30pm on Thursday, when he found the child alone.
He lured the child by giving a note of Tk 20 and raped her. When she shouted, her mother rushed there and rescued her.
Meanwhile, a case was filed on Thursday night, five days after the rape of another seven-year-old girl at the child care centre of a local NGO in Narua village of Raiganj upazila in Sirajganj on March 9, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in the district.
The child accused, a 15-year-old hailing from Narua village, went into hiding along with his family after the incident, Raiganj police station officer-in-charge Md Asaduzzaman said, adding that the victim was undergoing treatment at the Shahid M Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital.
The accused’s mother was a teacher at the child care center of the NGO.
