
Four people were killed and several others injured in road accidents in Sylhet, Feni, Pabna and Jamalpur on Friday.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Sylhet reported that a college student was killed when a speeding pickup van belonging to a sweetmeat company, Mithai, struck him in the Rampur area of Kanaighat in the district on Friday.
The deceased, Maruf Ahmed, 18, was a student of Kanaighat Government College.
Maruf was critically injured and taken to the local upazila health complex, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
‘The pickup van was seized, but the driver managed to flee the scene. The body was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination,’ said Abdul Awal, officer in-charge of Kanaighat police station.
In Feni, a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw driver, Md Sohel, 22, was killed after being hit by a speeding microbus while refuelling at the BSCIC area on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, reported the ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Feni.Â
Sohel sustained severe injuries and was declared dead at Feni 250-Bed General Hospital.
Farzana Akter, a cousin of the deceased, said that Sohel hailed from Noakhali. ‘Sohel’s sudden death has left his family in deep shock.’
Harun Ur Rashid, officer in-charge of Mohipal highway police station, said that the damaged auto-rickshaw was seized while the body of Sohel was sent for post-mortem.
Meanwhile, the United News of Bangladesh reported that a collision between a human hauler and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw at Santhia in Pabna killed Azizul, 40, and his three-year-old son, Abu Huraira, residents of Sripur in Pabna Sadar.
‘The accident also left three others injured. They are undergoing treatment at Pabna General Hospital,’ said Saidur Rahman, officer in-charge of Santhia police station.
He also said that the CNG-powered auto-rickshaw was traveling from Santhia to Pabna while the human hauler was headed in the opposite direction towards Santhia.
‘When the vehicles reached the spot, the human hauler and the auto-rickshaw collided head-on, leaving five passengers in the auto-rickshaw seriously injured,’ he mentioned.
In another accident in Jamalpur Sadar, at least 10 people were injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a covered van on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh highway, the UNB reported.
Three critically injured individuals were being treated at Jamalpur sadar hospital, while others were discharged after first aid.
Officer in-charge of Jamalpur sadar police station Abu Faisal Md Atik confirmed the matter.
